Ike talks to Cody from Cobb tuning. They talk About getting Cody got into the business, a bit of the the history & background of Cobb, why they are different (and better in my opinion) the other tuning companies, how cars get chosen for tuning, does Cody have the most Jalop cars owned history? (Yes). A lot of hot Saabaru talk, why Cobb is for people who are rational adults, Software vs Hardware, & of course Questions from !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

The only question I have is one that everyone scoffs at and never asks.
Why doesn’t Cobb support the LS engine with their wonderful Accessport tuner? I would kill to have the ability to have that on my GTO.
I’m even tempted to look into afterarket engine management to see if I have improved options for the tuners.

Where were you a week ago when I was looking for questions? That's a good one!

I have no idea. Oh well, I talk to Cody occasionally anyway, I’ll call and ask him.
I read something about the GM ECUs not having enough RAM to support the extra code or somesuch but I dunno about that. Brenspeed/SCT have it figured out for the S197 Mustangs. I was very disappointed to find that the pre-made or “canned” tunes offered for the LS motors have a poor rep and that everyone just agrees that Dyno tuning is the only option and that you have to plunk down $400-$600 each time you change the build and require a retune.
I’ve been meaning to call Diablosport and check with them. I don’t mind doing dyno tunes but I’m not ready to spend several thousand to do ALL of my engine and exhaust mods at once.

They don’t focus on the LS because the potential for gains on an NA engine generally pales in comparison to that of a turbo engine. Given that they are only just now getting into VWs when the last 3 generations of GTI have been turbocharged I’d say NA engines like the LS are still a ways off.

By that logic, there isn’t any point in getting a NA engine tuned without serious upgrades. If customers want it, then why not. I readily admit that many of the sterotypical owners of these cars that daily drive their sweet Z28 with Hoosiers and an open header may not be the Cobb customer. I would love the have the ease and possibilities of the Accessport system. Especially since one of their tuning facilities is so close to my house for any issues to be cleared up.

I didn’t mean that there isn’t much of a point to tuning an NA engine without serious upgrades.
I meant that the market is much smaller because it is harder to sell a 5-10% gain (guess) on a stock LS when you can market 30%+ gains out of a turbo engine with little to no hardware changes. Meaning to say the incentive to enter the LS market isnt there yet when they still have markets with bigger potential to get into, as they are just doing with VWs now.
It would obviously be great to be able to change your map for your own application and modification path but that market it pretty limited to hardcore people as most will stick to bolt-ons.

Ah, well, yes I agree. I guess we’re in the minority since we want our cars to run well with our upgrades at all times, not just WOT.

Getting a custom tune is the best idea regardless of which product you use for your engine calibrations.
Pretty much everyone in the Subaru community will tell you that OTS tunes are OK to run short term, but you really should get a protune. Not only will you get more power, but improved reliability as well.

I understand WHY I get a dyno tune. I just object to spending $400-$600 everytime I want to alter it. That’s a pain in my ass and my wallet.

Owning and maintaining a dyno isn’t cheap and people who are good at tuning don’t work for cheap either. You’ve got to pay to play. Plan ahead and do your modifications in groups. Many tuners will do smaller changes for changes for more like 2-300 and touch ups for free
